Hi! I’m Cata. I’m a PhD student researching higher education. What makes adults learn? Why do some spaces make people curious and others shut them down? And why do some students find a way to stay and thrive while others don’t? I care deeply about making staying or leaving a real choice, not a consequence of spaces that never made people feel like they belonged in the first place.
I’m a mixed-methods researcher, which basically means I’m equally fascinated by numbers that measure change and by the kind of stories that make our theories fall apart. I think that tension is where the interesting stuff lives ❤
But I’m also someone who gets her hands covered in clay, who photographs every city a conference drops her into, and who reads papers while knitting.
This blog exists because I got tired of keeping those two versions of myself separate.
Unfinished Work is where I’ll try to think out loud: about research, about education and its social justice potential, about what it’s like to be a Latina scholar writing and thinking in English, about what I’m making and what’s making me. No final answers here. Everything is mid-process… which, if you ask me, is where real thinking happens 🙂

Hola! Soy Cata. Soy una estudiante de doctorado que investiga sobre educación superior. Qué hace que los adultos aprendan? por qué algunos espacios despiertan la curiosidad y otros la apagan? y por qué algunos estudiantes encuentran la manera de quedarse y disfrutar el proceso, mientras otros no? Me interesa profundamente que quedarse o irse sea una decisión real, y no la consecuencia de espacios que no permitieron que las personas sintieran que pertenecían.
Soy investigadora de métodos mixtos, lo que básicamente significa que me encanta trabajar con números que miden efecto y crecimiento, de la misma manera en que me fascinan las historias que destruyen nuestras teorías previas. Creo que en esa tensión vive lo más interesante
Pero también soy alguien que termina con las manos llenas de barro, que fotografía cada ciudad donde la deja una conferencia, y que lee papers mientras teje.
Este blog existe porque me cansé de mantener esas dos versiones de mí misma separadas.
Unfinished Work es donde voy a intentar pensar en voz alta: sobre investigación, sobre educación y su potencial de justicia social, sobre lo que significa ser una académica latina escribiendo y pensando en inglés, sobre lo que estoy haciendo y lo que me está haciendo a mí. Nada de respuestas definitivas. Todo está en proceso… que, si me preguntan, es donde ocurre el pensar de verdad 🙂
